On October 7th, our Clinical Education department hosted colleagues from across the North West and beyond at the Cancer Care Conference in Liverpool, the third annual event the team have hosted.

The conference was opened by Clatterbridge Cancer Centre's Chief Executive, Joan Spencer, and explored key topics relating to cancer care, with a focus on Shared Decision Making, whilst considering how the patient experience can be enhanced.

Delegates listened to presentations and took part in communication workshops from individuals at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and other NHS and care organisations. The conference was open to anyone whose role involves treating, caring or supporting people affected by cancer.

Speakers included:

Emma Walker, Advancing Quality Alliance (AQUA) - What is Shared Decision Making (SDM), and why is it so important? and The Practicalities of Shared Decision Making – tools, models and challenges.

Dr Mark Johnston, Consultant Geriatrician, The Royal Liverpool University Hospital - Applying SDM when considering frailty with a cancer diagnosis.

Marie Orr, Therapeutic Radiography and Oncology Lecturer, University of Liverpool - The importance of SDM in the context of gaining informed consent.

Emma Davey, Palliative Care CNS, The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre - The Importance of SDM for those living with a dual diagnosis, living with HIV and cancer.

Helen Marshall Practice placement lead – pre-registration adult nursing and Dr Carolyn Lees, Senior Lecturer (Nursing), University of Liverpool - The Research Engagement and Collaborative Health Enquiry (REACHE project) working to integrate people with learning disabilities in research.

Anthony O’Connor, Lived Experience Partner, Advancing Quality Alliance (AQUA) - Lived Experience of Shared Decision Making in Cancer Care.

Olivia Corrie, Frontline Communications - Enabling Shared Decision Making through effective Communication skills.

The Clinical Education team work incredibly hard in organising this event for the local healthcare community, ensuring its programme showcased diverse and interesting topics, and was very well received by attendees.
